Silver Pieces Frequent Asked Questions
What is tarnishing?
Tarnishing is a natural chemical reaction that occurs when metals are exposed to air, moisture, or even the natural oils on your skin. Over time, some pieces may darken or lose a bit of their shine.
It’s not a flaw – it’s chemistry. And it’s also a sign your jewelry has been truly loved.
Why do some metals tarnish?
Each metal reacts differently to its environment:
- Sterling Silver: may darken due to sulfur in the air.
- Stainless Steel: very resistant, but not completely immune.
- Gold-plated: the gold layer may wear off over time, exposing the base metal underneath, which can tarnish.
How can I make my jewelry last longer?
Here are some tips to keep your pieces beautiful for years to come:
- Store them in a dry, airtight container.
- Avoid contact with water, sweat, perfume, or lotions.
- Clean them gently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Remove your jewelry before sleeping, showering, or exercising.
What causes tarnishing?
Common factors that can accelerate tarnishing include:
- Oxygen in the air
- Humidity and sweat
- Perfume, lotions, cosmetics
- Pollution (like sulfur compounds)
Even your skin’s natural oils can trigger a reaction.
Can tarnishing be completely avoided?
Tarnishing is part of a natural process, especially with well-worn and well-loved pieces. But with the right care, you can slow it down and preserve the shine of your favorite jewelry.
At Paola Sighinolfi, we embrace timeless beauty — and believe that a little patina only adds to the story each piece tells.
